What is an MOT?

In the UK, an MOT is a mandatory annual test for vehicles over 3 years old to ensure they meet minimum safety and environmental standards.

It checks things like:

  • Brakes
  • Tyrees
  • Lights
  • Steering and suspension
  • Seatbelts
  • Windscreen wipers
  • Exhaust emissions

What does an MOT result look like?

A typical MOT result will be one of the following:

  • Pass – No issues reported with the car.
  • Pass with advisories – No major issues with the car but some minor issues.
  • Fail – Major issues that must be fixed before the car is allowed on the road.

Where can I find a car’s MOT history?

You can use the GOV.UK website here to check a car’s MOT history.

How much does it cost?

For a standard car, an MOT can cost a maximum of £54.85. This is just for the test itself. You may have to pay more to repair any issues found during the test.
