Claude sessions

Sessions are persisted as .jsonld files locally

Claude Code saves your conversation locally as you work. It saves each message, tool use, and result in a plain .jsonl file under ~/.claude/projects/<project-name>. This means you can rewind, resume or fork past sessions.

Sessions are independent

Each session starts with a fresh context window meaning the conversation history from previous sessions don’t persist. Claude can persist learnings across sessions using auto memory and you can also add your own persistent instructions using a CLAUDE.md file.

You can resume sessions

Resuming a session reopens a previous session under the same session ID. You can resume a session using:

claude --resume 

You can fork sessions

Forking a session copies the current session’s history into a new session. You can fork using:

claude --resume <session-id> --fork-session
