Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)
What is UTC?
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is a standardized time that is constant throughout the world. So if it’s 9pm UTC time in London, then it’s also 9pm UTC time in Melbourne, Australia.
By providing a common time reference UTC helps people worldwide synchronize time-related activities and avoid confusion caused by varying timezones.
UTC doesn’t change with daylight savings.
Example applications of UTC
Store uniform date and time in databases
It’s common for developers to store date and time in UTC format when working with databases like MySQL. This makes it easier to convert from the same date/time values to different time zones depending on the user using the application.
How does UTC relate to GMT?
UTC has superseded GMT as the standardized time most used in computing and international time standards.
